Character Names

Tiefling name generator

Tieflings get their names twice. The first comes from an infernal tradition that is not theirs by choice, full of hissing consonants and Latinate weight. The second is the one some tieflings pick for themselves: a virtue name, chosen as a statement of intent about who they will be instead.

How tieflings are named

Either an infernal given name with no surname, or a Common-language virtue name used in its place. Hope, Reverence, and Sorrow all function as full names. A tiefling who introduces themselves as Carrion is telling you something deliberate.

Picking one that works at the table

  • Virtue names are the strongest roleplay hook in the game. Pick one that the character has not lived up to yet.
  • Tieflings rarely carry family surnames, so the given name has to do all the work.
  • An infernal name kept by choice reads very differently from one kept by default. Decide which.

Using these names

Every name here follows tiefling naming conventions from the D&D 5e SRD and traditional fantasy literature. None are copied from published characters, so they are safe to use in your own campaigns, streams, and published work without attribution.
